8. Determination of total concentration and chemical forms of lead in surface sediments collected from Cua Dai, Quang Nam

Abstract

Cua Dai is the intersecting place of three rivers: Thu Bon, Truong Giang and De Vong. Which also receives most of the wastewater from industrial and residential areas. This study presents a survey data on concentrations of lead in surface sediment samples collected at five locations in Cua Dai. Total Pb concentrations ranged from 42,182 mg/kg đến 358,981 mg/kg dry weight in sediment samples. The total metal content of Pb in the areas affected by human impact is higher than that of the substrate. The analysis of the total heavy metal content of sediment is insufficient when assessing the environmental impact the metals will have on the receiving media.  Chemical forms in which the metal is associated will not only determine the metals behaviour but also the mobility and bioavailability within the environment. Sequential extraction procedures based upon Tessier et al., (1979) were used to determine five chemical forms of lead in  sediments, including exchangeable, bound to carbonates, reducible, oxidisable and residual. The RAC index was calculated indicates the level of risk is moderate to high.
