07. Evaluation and verification of chlorophyll-a and surface seawater temperature generating from MODIS remote sensing data at the East Vietnam Sea

Abstract

Chlorophyll-a and surface seawater temperature play an important role in marine ecosystems. Chlorophyll-a and sea surface temperature are also used as input data for forecasting models, atmospheric circulation and ecological monitoring of the marine environment. In order to verify and evaluate the error of chlorophyll-a and surface seawater temperature generating from MODIS remote sensing data, chlorophyll-a and surface seawater temperature measured at 1407 studied sites in the East Vietnam Sea from 2015 - 2020 was used in this study. The results found that seawater temperature at 207 synchronized sites showed high correlation coefficients (R > 0.9). Seawater temperature generating from MODIS data was slightly lower than that of field measurement (the error ME = -0.8oC, RMSE = 2.3%). At 57 synchronized sites, chlorophyll-a showed high correlation coefficients (R > 0.9). Chlorophyll-a levels generating from MODIS data was higher than those of field measurement (the error ME = MAE = 0.13mg/m3, RMSE = 1.5%). Findings from this study suggested that chlorophyll-a and surface seawater temperature generating from MODIS data is highly reliable and can be used for further studies.
