11. HEC-HMS hydrological model for forecasting the flow of water into Ban Chat reservoir during flood season 2020

Abstract

Ban Chat is one of the major reservoirs on Da River system. The operation of Ban Chat reservoir directly affects the operation of Huoi Quang reservoir and indirectly affects Son La, Hoa Binh reservoirs as well as water level at downstream area. To improve the efficiency of reservoir operation for power generation and flood control, the Disaster Mitigation Department, Institute of Mechanics - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (one of six inter-reservoirs operating consultants of Vietnam Disaster Management Authority) was set up and used hydrological models to estimate the flow of water into reservoirs. In this study, a numerical model was developed for Ban Chat basin using HEC-HMS software in order to estimate the flow of water into Ban Chat reservoir during flood season. The simulation results of the flood season in 2018, calibration in 2019 and forecast for 2020 of this model were compared and evaluated with measured data. The results showed that the model was applicable in forecasting the flow of water into the reservoir.
